Hanging On To Summer – How-To Get The Most Out of Your Remaining Days

A few evenings ago, as I was sitting on my porch enjoying my first second glass of wine, I looked up at the sky and admired the perfectly picturesque sunset. You know, the kind that has streaks of orange, purple, pink and blue – the kind that makes you go “wow”. Wait a minute. Sunset? But it wasn’t even 8 o’clock! I could’ve sworn just yesterday it was setting at 9…

And then it hit me.

We’re well into August. And just as I was finally getting used to the 90*F heat and sweltering humidity (gotta love New York!), summer is now rapidly coming to a close. But it can’t be! Quick, where’s my swimsuit and beach towel? I need a s’more stat!

If you (like me) are desperately trying to hang on to these last few summer days and soak up as many activities (and wine) as you can, well you’re in luck! Here’s a handy-dandy guide for how to get the most out of the rest of this summer in the FLX.

For the healthy inspired:

Hunt Country Vineyards

Breathe in….and breathe out. Hunt Country Vineyards is bringing yoga to the tasting room every Thursday, and we certainly don’t mind! Get your namaste-on and then roll up your mat and grab a glass.

Hunt Vineyards Hunter's Red

And for when you feel more like relaxing in yoga pants than with actual yoga, Hunter’s Red is perfect for a casual night in. Bold dark fruit flavors with mellow tannins make this ideal for couch or porch sipping!

If your type of marathon involves actual running and not just binge watching Netflix, than Wagner Vineyards might be the spot for you. They’re sponsoring a 5K race through the Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve at sunset to benefit the local food pantry. How pretty! Register for the event here.

Did you know marathons consist of more than just Netflix and bowls of ice cream?? Me neither!

Wagner Rosé of Cabernet Franc

To celebrate your 5K victory, stop in and pick up a bottle of their Rosé of Cab Franc. Bright, crisp, fruity and dry, this rosé compliments that juicy grilled steak you’ve been drooling over. Hey, you deserve it!

For the food oriented:

Keuka Springs Vineyards

If you’re like me, you can’t pass up an opportunity to indulge on a good wine and cheese pairing. Don’t worry, Keuka Spring has you covered. Stop by on Wednesdays through August to personally sample some of their wines matched with cheeses from local creameries. We’ll see you there! (P.S. I’ll be the one stuffing my face…).

And if you’re looking to bring the pairing party home with you, we suggest Clara’s Red with a spicy cheese, like pepper jack, or some wings – yum!

Knapp Winery

Garlic. You either love it or you hate it. The die-hard fans are in luck – Knapp Winery is hosting a No Kiss Goodnight event, a 5-course meal inspired by our favorite stinky breath culprit. Enjoy a full array of garlic infused dishes accompanied by a hand-picked selection of wines. For a peak at the menu and ticket info, head over to their website here.

Knapp Superstition

To get rid of that gross garlic aftertaste, try a glass of the Superstition. The bright and bold flavors of the Concord grape should mask any of those garlic fumes, and maybe even guarantee you a goodnight kiss after all!

McGregor Highlands Red

If jazz music isn’t really your cup of tea (or glass of wine), then be sure to grab a bottle of Glenora’s Peach Passion or Pomegranate Pizzaz and make yourself some wine pops. Yep, that’s frozen wine on a stick people, and it’s delicious. See the recipes here.

Three Brothers Winery

Three Brothers Winery, Geneva NY

Three Brothers Winery, Geneva NY

Arguably the best decade there ever was (if you ask anyone over the age of 35), the 80’s is known for it’s music and – if I may be so bold – it’s incredibly cheezy, yet classic films. Three Brothers Winery and Estate embraces this by hosting an 80’s movie night, with the famous “Beuller” as it’s August flick. Check this out for more info!

A great summer sipper and companion to all your 80’s guilty pleasure movies (don’t worry, we won’t judge).

Passion Feet Chardonnay

Passion Feet Chardonnay – do our feet look passionate enough?

If you’d prefer to skip the movie, in true Beuller fashion, and enjoy your wine at home, we recommend Three Brothers Passion Feet Chardonnay. Slight sweet with earthy undertones, this is a great summer sipper and companion to all your 80’s guilty pleasure movies (don’t worry, we won’t judge).

For more events in the Finger Lakes, check out this handy schedule here, or check your local winery’s website to see what’s happening with them! And as always, we’re happy to suggest more summer wines and ways to get the most of your wines in store!
